- Story Text: United states Vice President George Bush assured Chinese leaders on October 14 that he would resist protectionist measures proposed in Congress aimed at slashing textile imports. Bush had seven hours of talks with Chinese officials including Premier Zhao Ziyang. Both sides called the talks friendly and useful. Peking considers the Taiwan issue to be the main obstacle to better ties with Washington, but officials travelling with Bush played the dispute down. Continuing arms sales to Taiwan have been a source of friction between Washington and Peking. Nationalist Taiwan is still officially at war with China. Bush also met Communist Party General Secretary Hu Yaobang and Foreign Minister Wu Xueqian. Bush's visit coincides with talks between China and the Soviet Union in Peking on normalising relations. Western diplomats said the fact that the two events coincided may indicate Peking's desire to be seen to adopt an even-handed approach in its dealings with the two superpowers. Premier Zhao said he hoped that Washington and Moscow would take advantage of the November Reagan-Gorbachev summit to reduce their nuclear arsenals.
