- Story Text: Chinese police seized 1.8 million fake CDs and DVDs on Tuesday (April 3) when they raided a factory in the country's largest crackdown on entertainment industry piracy.
The high-tech operation used 30 machines spread over 11 warehouses to churn out more than 300,000 fake discs a night, the Xinhua news agency quoted a top anti-piracy official as saying.
Police arrested 13 people at the factory in Guangzhou, capital of the southeastern province of Guangdong, near Hong Kong. Officials said it was located on the highway to Guangzhou airport for easy transportation and the pirates had developed new tricks to erase ID codes on discs to make them untraceable.
China came under fire last week from the United States, which said the Asian nation seemed to be losing the battle against an army of increasingly sophisticated counterfeiters.
A coalition of U.S. film, software, music and book industry groups recently estimated its companies had lost 2.2 billion U.S. dollars in potential business in China in 2006 as a result of piracy.
Many members of Congress have called for the U.S. Trade Representative's Office to file a complaint against China for piracy at the World Trade Organisation.
China last week urged patience from the developed world as it seeks to stop infringements of patents, copyright and other intellectual property. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
