Nine workers were killed and one rescued after a coal mine collapsed in northern China's Shanxi province, state media reported on Wednesday (January 18).
The accident happened at 10:45 a.m. (0245 GMT) on Tuesday (January 17) at the Danshuigou colliery in Shuozhou City, when ten miners were working underground, state broadcaster CCTV said.
The only survivor was rescued early on Wednesday and is now in a stable condition in hospital, CCTV added.
It added that the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Shanxi, the country's top coal producer, accounts for about a quarter of coal production in China. The province currently supplies coking coal to China's top steel mills and also exports to Japan and Korea.
Coal accounts for almost two-thirds of China's energy consumption, but its mines are among the world's deadliest, due to lax enforcement of safety standards. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China)
