- Story Text: An explosion that occurred on Friday night (May 2) at a factory owned by Foxconn in Chengdu, China killed two employees and injured 16 others, state news agency Xinhua reported.
The factory, forced to halt production, is said to produce the popular iPad 2 for Apple, who is now investigating the deadly explosion.
Foxconn, part of Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industries group and Apple's main manufacturing partner, said in a statement the explosion happened at about 7 pm local time (1100GMT) on Friday (May 20, 2011).
Foxconn in a statement said that "production has been suspended at the site of the explosion until the completion of the investigation", stressing that employee safety remains the company's highest priority.
The company did not name the affected plant or say what it made, but China's official Xinhua News Agency reported that it was the Hongfujin Precision Electronics plant in a high-tech industrial zone west of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province.
Hon Hai spokesman Edmund Ding said the company is still evaluating losses.
The plant explosion is the latest setback for Foxconn, the world's largest contract manufacturer.
It made headlines last year after reports emerged about poor working conditions at factories in southern China, which critics say may have been the driving force behind a the multiple suicides of more than 13 workers last year.
The company has since pledged to improve employee welfare. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
