- Story Text: A U.S. citizen of Chinese descent has been arrested by Beijing police, accused of soliciting prostitution, state media reported on Friday (August 30).
China's state broadcaster CCTV reported that Beijing police arrested investor Charles Xue for his "involvement in prostitution".
Sixty-year-old Xue was accused of participation in group sex activities, CCTV quoted Beijing Public Security Bureau as saying.
Xue is also an active blogger on Weibo and he writes his posts in Chinese.
Xue, in an interview with CCTV, confessed that he had been involved in prostitution.
"When I was working abroad doing business, I have come across sex trades in countries such as Thailand and the Netherlands and so on, and I have taken part in those activities, understood them, and was also caught by this vice," he said.
Zhang Xiaoguang, head of the law enforcement detachment of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau's security team said the police have investigated into Xue's activities.
"He first went to the temporary apartment of a prostitute and then had sex with her," he said.
"We have arrested more than 10 prostitutes who had sex with him (Xue)," he added.
Experts said foreign investors in China must abide by Chinese political rules, or they will be heavily punished.
"It comes from the Premier more than the President Xi Jinping. I think foreign companies are warned that, although Chinese authorities would like to create a favourable market for foreign capital, nonetheless there are still certain political rules to be followed. Those who don't follow those political rules, they, again, have to anticipate that they have to pay a certain price," said Joseph Cheng, City University of Hong Kong professor of political science.
"So there is always this attitude or this demand on the part of the regime and the judiciary, that if you admit your crimes and that if you demonstrate a good positive attitude, then you will get a lenient sentence. Otherwise, if you try to be defiant or you try to defend yourself, go against the verdict, go against the prosecution, then you expect a heavier sentence," he added.
CCTV said police had reported the arrest of Xue to the U.S. Embassy in China last week. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
