- Story Text: The worst floods in decades hit southern China's Guangdong and Guangxi province, killing at least 30 people, and forcing hundreds of thousands more to evacuate, state media reported on Tuesday (August 20).
Typhoon Utor, the strongest to hit China so far this year, passed through Guangdong and Guangxi last week, but the heavy rains which followed it have brought more chaos to the region.
As of 2 p.m. local time (0600 GMT) on Monday, 18 people had been killed, five remained missing, and over 2,600 houses had collapsed in Guangdong, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.
Nearly 500,000 residents had been relocated in 583 townships of the province and over four million people had been affected, with direct economic loss worth five billion yuan ($820 million), it added.
Two helicopters were dispatched to deliver relief supplies to flood-hit coastal city of Shantou on Monday (August 19), state television CCTV reported.
Worst rainstorms since 1951 had ravaged the city for the last few days, causing severe flooding and serious damage, said CCTV.
In neighbouring Guangxi province, 12 people had been killed and over one million affected since Utor hit, said Xinhua.
Days of downpours drove up river water levels and inundated hundreds of residential houses and many acres of farmland in Guiping city, CCTV reported.
Local police were mobilised to evacuate residents from low-lying areas, it showed.
More rain was expected to hit Guangxi on Tuesday and Wednesday (August 21), according to meteorological authorities. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
