  • Story Text: The Indian President arrived in the Chinese capital Beijing on Monday (May 18) for a visit marking a normalisation of ties after years of strain.

    China's President Yang Shangkun welcomed India's President Ramaswamy Venkataraman at a formal ceremony outside the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square.

    President Yang described Venkataraman's six-day visit as "a big event", and said it would promote bilateral ties. Yang accepted an invitation by Venkataraman to visit India at a later date.

    India and China, the world's two most populous countries, fought a brief war in 1962 and wrangled for years over their common border. Premier Li Peng late last year became the first Chinese head of government to visit India in 31 years, after then-Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi made a ground-breaking trip to China in December 1988.

    Diplomats said Venkataraman's visit, which will last until May 23, was mostly ceremonial and they did not expect any major announcements to result from it.
