  • Story Text: China displayed its military strength with its first "live long-range rocket launch drill" near the Yellow Sea on Sunday (July 25), state media reported.
    The drill, which used live rockets, was carried out on Sunday (July 25), state-run China Central Television (CCTV) said on Tuesday (July 27).
    The drill coincided with a joint military exercise between the U.S. and South Korea in the Yellow sea.
    CCTV showed rare footage of a rocket launcher truck firing long-range rockets and soldiers operating unmanned aircraft and radar.
    However, the report did not say exactly where it took place or the size of the drill.
    Beijing has criticized the joint exercises between the U.S. and South Korea, which aim to underscore deterrence against North Korea but which many in China see as a threat.
    Earlier this month, China also showcased a series of military drills including naval exercises which involved a submarine firing long-range missiles, as well as rehearsals on how to defend against long-distance attacks and exploring ways to integrate troops and civilians to tackle emergencies.
    China's growing military clout and rising defence spending have raised concern in Asia, especially in Japan.
    Taiwan, the self-ruled island China claims as its own, warned this week that its huge neighbour was still aiming missiles at it, despite warming business and trade ties.
