- Story Text: A giant panda with a broken back underwent an operation on Sunday (July 2) in Xian (pron: see-ann), capital of northwest Shaanxi Province. It is only the second time such an operation has been carried out on a panda and experts hope the animal will successfully recover soon.
The injured panda was found unconscious by tourists in Shaanxi Changqing State-class Nature Reserve in the Qinling Mountains, probably after falling from a tree. Tourists alerted local authorities who transferred the wounded panda to provincial capital Xian.
After the panda was found, experts worked overnight making a careful examination of the injured panda before deciding to perform a surgery on the animal. They said the panda had suffered three broken vertebrae and damage to its spinal chord causing partial paralysis, which was probably due to a fall from a tree.
"We think that the panda probably had a fall during that time. And that probably caused the spinal or chest injuries, which resulted in partial paralysis and to add to that, the injuries the panda suffered on his head caused him to be unconscious for a period of time," said an official from the Shaanxi Wildlife Rescue Centre. - Copyright Holder: CCTV (China) - NO RESALE MAINLAND CHINA
