- Story Text: Up to 10 pandas will be travelling from their home in western China to Beijing Zoo for the duration of the Olympic games this August. The pandas, which were raised at China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Wolong, Sichuan province, will first be selected by the Chinese people in an online vote.
The online voters will be able to choose from 16 panda candidates at the research center. The result of the vote will be announced on March 29.
The pandas, which were all born in 2006, will be on display with the seven existing pandas at Beijing Zoo until November.
The zoo has already has started improve its panda facilites already to accommodate the new arrivals. There are aso plans for a panda museum that would document the struggle to save the contrary creature from extinction, the state-run People's Daily stated.
A Beijing Zoo official said the pandas will have a large interior and exterior living area at the zoo.
A large team of keepers, vets and technicians has been sent by Wolong to ensure the safety and comfort of the creatures during their stay in the new environment, state news agency Xinhua said.
The panda has become synomymous with China, and one of the five 'friendlies', the mascots for the olympic games, is a panda.
