DC residents on Saturday (February 8) voiced their concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's recent threat to take over the Kennedy Center.
Trump said on Friday (February 7) he will "immediately terminate multiple individuals" from the Kennedy Center's board of trustees, including its chair, adding a new board will soon be announced with him as chairman.
Resident Gillian Cooper told Reuters she believed "there will probably be a lot of budget cuts" and that "that's not what the arts need."
Another resident, Tim Intesilano, said Trump told voters "what he was going to do, which was take over all institutions of government" and he's doing so.
Taking over the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is Trump's latest move to upend institutions in Washington. The Kennedy Center, which receives federal funding, is one of the nation's leading arts facilities and has long enjoyed bipartisan support and national renown. Presidents appoint members of its board of trustees.
