SHOPPING CENTER WITH COLLAPSED ROOF 2. VARIOUS OF TEAMS CONTINUE THEIR WORK SCRIPT At least eight people were killed and 80 others injured after the roof of a food court at the Real Plaza Trujillo shopping center in northwestern Peru collapsed, local media reported. The Interior Ministry announced that the roof of a shopping mall in Trujillo, the country’s third-largest city, collapsed, killing eight people, including three children, and injuring 80 others. Rescue teams, including firefighters, were deployed to save those trapped under the debris. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. According to the Emergency Operations Center (COER), part of the roof remains intact but is at risk of further collapse. The section that caved in fell on a restaurant, children’s amusement park, and cinemas, raising concerns that the death toll could increase. Former mayor Arturo Fernandez had previously warned about structural risks at the mall, calling it a “ticking time bomb.” Peruvian President Dina Boluarte stressed the need for a thorough investigation and severe punishment for those responsible. She expressed condolences to the victims' families and emphasized that safety regulations must be strictly enforced to prevent future tragedies. The company operating the mall stated that the building had passed recent technical inspections. Real Plaza’s operations manager, Garlet Rodriguez, confirmed that the mall was last inspected in September 2023, with no structural issues found.
