BLOVIAN PRESIDENT LUIS ARCE SPEAKING SCRIPT Bolivia celebrated the annual Day of the Sea on Sunday, March 23 with a parade held in the capital, La Paz. In capital La paz a large military parade was organized in honor of Eduardo Abaroa, one of the leaders of the Bolivian resistance, who died during the 1879–1883 War of the Pacific with Chile. Every March 23rd, the Bolivian people commemorate Maritime Vindication Day, in homage to the historic feat of Eduardo Abaroa in the defense of Calama after the Chilean invasion of the Litoral department. Bolivian President Luis Arce attended the event organized in La Paz to mark the Day of the Sea. The day, Dia del Mar, commemorates the loss of the “Litoral”, an extensive deserted region approximately 120,000 square kilometers in size running along the Pacific Coast, which Bolivia lost in the War of the Pacific, involving three countries: Bolivia and Peru against Chile in 1879. Bolivia considers the Dia del Mar an opportunity to reiterate its claims for access to the Pacific Ocean that was lost when the country became landlocked following the war.
