Aerial footage on Monday, March 31, shows the historic Umayyad Mosque in capital Damascus and believers arriving at the mosque to perform the Eid prayer. From early morning, Syrians filled the mosque with religious chants and prayers. Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr with prayers, feasts, and social gatherings marking the end of Ramadan's month-long dawn-to-dusk fasting. It is the first one of the two main festivals in Islam, the other being Eid al-Adha. Some countries began to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, while others mark the festival on Monday. Bashar Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in power since 1963. This is the nation's first Eid al-Fitr after Assad's rule.
