Titled R-EVOLUTION, the multidimensional artwork by Italian-born artist Marco Cochrane was unveiled on Thursday, drawing attention for its striking scale and expressive design. Crafted from steel, the 16,000-pound (7,257-kilogram) sculpture depicts a standing woman in a peaceful pose, intended to represent strength, freedom, and body positivity. The sculpture was initially proposed for installation at Union Square in July 2022. However, city officials later announced that the statue could not be placed there due to concerns over its weight, which exceeds the structural limits of the square's surface tiles. Cochrane, known for creating large-scale, figurative sculptures of women, first introduced R-EVOLUTION at the Burning Man festival in 2015. Since then, the statue has been exhibited in various locations including the Las Vegas Strip and Petaluma, California. The current installation is presented by public arts organization Illuminate in collaboration with Mad Alchemy, a group known for their psychedelic-inspired visuals. The partners have planned a series of immersive light shows to accompany the sculpture, aiming to transform it into what they describe as a “living, breathing experience.” According to organizers, R-EVOLUTION will remain at Embarcadero Plaza for the next six months, offering both locals and tourists a unique opportunity to engage with large-scale public art in one of the city’s most visited areas.
