- Story Text: The International Colombian Fashion Week entered its second day Thursday (February 19) with national designer Pepa Pombo getting top billing.
The eighth annual fashion show for fall and winter wear began on Wednesday (February 18) in Bogota, and is scheduled to close out on Tuesday (February 24).
The work of some 40 designers is being sent down the runway for what it is the preeminent global stage for Colombian designers.
Receiving top billing for the Thursday program was the Colombian born and long-time Mexican resident Pepa Pombo.
Famous for her accessible yet expertise knitwork, Pombo has been a presence on the international fashion scene for nearly four decades.
"This (show) is inspired from the circuses of the 19th Century, as you all saw with what's call acrobatics and inspired in that century with all types of textures and movements, and, on top of everything, closing with a lace almost fully sewn - a job of several years," she said after her styles were sent down the runway amid animated projections and set to the beats of local rhythms.
The week also made sure to highlight new and upcoming designers, like Carrusel, whose "Trip through the Universe" collection sought to present an optimistic world vision void of the darkness of everyday realities.
While the Colombian fashion week continues to try and promote domestic styles for global wear, the 2009 show marked a turning point in the battle for the national fashion capital.
This year's running marked the first time the week was staged in the capital Bogota.
Organizers said they were expecting some 35,000 visitors for the fashion week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
