Christians in Gaza attended a service held at the church under Israeli airstrikes. Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, which is mentioned in all four canonical Gospels. Saint Porphyrius Church is one of the oldest Christian sites in Gaza. It was built in the 5th century and named after Saint Porphyrius, whose tomb is inside the church. Last July, two Israeli missiles hit the church and heavy damage was reported on the building, where dozens of displaced Palestinian Christians have taken refuge. Palestinian authorities said the Israeli army committed a new war crime by targeting Saint Porphyrius Church in Gaza City. More than 50,900 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
