- Summary: Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda urges global cooperation to protect oceans at UN climate event (2) SHOTLIST: NEW YORK, US (APR. 23, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTIVIST AND ACTOR, JANE FONDA, SAYING: "This is an historic moment when the world shows cooperation over conflict, soil science over silence, and unity over unilateralism. It showed that the global community is capable of working together to protect the lifeblood of the planet. And I'm back today to witness the progress that has been made to bring the treaty to life since it was agreed. I'm ashamed to say that the United States government is not here, and this is the first time, not here, not shown up at these negotiations to safeguard the future of the oceans. Their chair is empty... Even without the United States present... countries from all over the world are still working hard to protect nature and create unity instead of division... ... Greenpeace always gives me hope... We are not powerless. We are stronger than they want us to believe. And we will not be silenced... This is it, folks. And we have to stand up with everything we have... I have witnessed the power of the people... To save this planet and to create a just and sustainable future.... ... Just a few weeks ago, we saw a private company threaten to totally bypass the United Nations and start mining the deep seas... President Trump has made a bargain with the devil. The devil in the fossil fuel industry... He's on the side of death. He's killing us and the nature that we depend on for our lives... The critical thing is that we stay together, that we stay united, that we not allow him to separate us, isolate us, and make us despair... We're in our documentary moment. And our descendants... will ask, what did you do? Did you stand up? ... Please help. Put courage to your people and tell them to reject imports from the United States... If it can't be exported, it won't be drilled... " SCRIPT Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and an accelerated transition to renewable energy at the 'Action for the Planet' event at the Millennium Hotel and United Nations headquarters in New York, US on Wednesday, Apr. 23. Oscar-winning actress and climate activist Jane Fonda criticized the US government's absence from the ongoing Global Ocean Treaty negotiations and urged global leaders to stand united in the fight against environmental destruction. “This is an historic moment when the world shows cooperation over conflict, soil science over silence, and unity over unilateralism,” Fonda said, lamenting that “the United States government is not here… Their chair is empty.” Despite the US absence, Fonda praised the international effort. “Countries from all over the world are still working hard to protect nature and create unity instead of division,” she noted, thanking environmental organizations like Greenpeace for continuing to give her hope. Fonda delivered a fierce call for resistance: “We are not powerless. We are stronger than they want us to believe. And we will not be silenced.” She warned of the growing threat of deep-sea mining and condemned what she described as President Trump's alliance with the fossil fuel industry. “He’s on the side of death. He’s killing us and the nature that we depend on for our lives.” Emphasizing the urgency of the moment, she said: “This is it, folks. And we have to stand up with everything we have.” Fonda also challenged global citizens to reject despair and remain united: “The critical thing is that we stay together, that we stay united, that we not allow him to separate us, isolate us, and make us despair.” Looking to the future, she reflected on the legacy of current actions: “We’re in our documentary moment… our descendants, our children, our grandchildren will ask, ‘What did you do?’ Did you stand up?” Fonda concluded with a direct appeal to Germany, urging the country to stop importing liquefied natural gas from the United States. “If it can’t be exported, it won’t be drilled. It’ll stay on the ground the way it needs to.”
