- Story Text: Jean-Paul Gaultier's creations took to the catwalk in Paris on Wednesday (July 06) for a fashion show which was directly inspired by Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake, and the recent Black Swan movie.
As lines of fur and feathered headpieces graced the catwalk, Gaultier's references to the royal bird's opera were far-reaching, encompassing ballet references to the Aronofsky-directed movie, plumage-sporting jackets and elegant, flowing gowns.
But despite an abundance of peacocks and black swans in the avian gala, the designer also plunged spectators into a world of empirical Russian fashion with a series of designs fit for a tzar.
And with such Soviet nostalgia in the air, it was with no surprise that Ukrainian Actress Milla Jovovich brought her daughter to take in the tutus.
"Gaultier is one of my closest, dearest, oldest friends so any time I can be here, to support him... And I'm just so excited, such a momentous time in his career, to be able to see the collection. And it's in the daytime so my baby could come for the first time," she said.
During the show, the designer, who is renowned for his creativity, presented both male and female models in a series of creations which included a particularly interesting trenchcoat and evening gown hybrid.
In another connection to the avian theme, Gaultier's models strutted their stuff in creations reminiscent of hunting attire, with parka jackets and fur-lined hoods.
"That was the real Jean-Paul. With all his sides. The man, the woman, the lover. With his skirts, the French singers, music, ballet. Everything he loves. You could say it was like a 'melting pot' of his 'best ofs'," said French Vogue Editor Carine Roitfeld. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
