- Story Text: The latest trends in bikini fashion for summer 2012 were showcased on Tuesday (May 31) in Rio de Janeiro as the city's fashion week, known as Fashion Rio, went into full swing.
Temperatures may have been dropping in Rio in the past weeks as the winter approaches but things certainly heated up on the catwalks as models paraded up and down in bikinis covered in tropical prints inspired by summer and the iconic beaches of Rio de Janeiro.
Jacqueline de Biase's designs for beachwear brand Salinas referenced the wave-shaped mosaic sidewalks of Copacabana beach and the colorful beach umbrellas that dot the city's miles of sandy beaches.
To the rhythms of a medley of Rio's traditional music such as bossa nova and samba, top model Isabeli Fontana opened the show that also featured Brazilian beauties Ana Claudia Michels, Aline Weber and Renata Kuerten.
Tiny bikinis, large swimsuits, hot pants, loose dresses and skirts with black-and-white geometric prints were displayed by the models who showed up with smokey orange eyes and espadrilles.
Coral, pink and yellow outfits reminded of the city's picturesque sunsets seen from Ipanema beach, while shades of blue took fashionistas back to Rio's sunny skies and deep seas.
De Biase also bet on handkerchiefs that sometimes were tied to the models' wrists or wrapped around large hats.
Fashion editor Carla Raimondi said Salinas' designs caught the essence of the beachside city and Brazil in general.
"I liked the prints, the colors and the shapes of the bikinis very much. I think it is a collection that looks like summer and portrays Brazil, Rio and even Sao Paulo."
Advertising executive Miltinho Talaveira said he believed De Biase was also inspired by a Brazilian art movement that erupted in the 60s known as tropicalism.
"She used Copacabana beach's sidewalk but also added color and texture. She also got a lot from tropicalism, which is a strong trend in this summer," he said.
Fashion Rio kicked off on Monday and thirty designers will present their latest creations until Saturday, when the event closes.
The bi-annual fashion event is Brazil's second largest, only behind Sao Paulo's Fashion Week which starts on mid-June. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
