- Story Text: Designer Erdem showed why he's a favourite with the world's first ladies at London Fashion Week on Monday. (September 20) The dressmaker of choice for the likes of Michelle Obama and the British Prime Minister's wife Samantha Cameron, his collection for Spring/Summer 2011 is likely to be seen on many famous women.
White chiffon with white applique and lace began the show, which was held in private gardens within a Georgian Square in Central London.
Colour crept in with Russian red showing up in the form of tiny flowers or a bright red lace dress. A dramatic floor length navy dress also came in lace.
Bright florals were a key theme. Dresses had nipped in waists and hemlines were fractionally a-line.
Backstage, Erdem told Reuters he was inspired by Russian ballet costumes.
"I did a show at the Victoria and Albert museum and I befriended the director and he gave me access to their archive of the Ballets Russes' costumes so I spent the summer in Blythe House which is their storage unit and going through their archives of costumes by (designer Leonard) Baskin and it was wonderful so I spent the summer really researching and surrounded by all these amazing Russian costumes."
The toast of the fashion world in London, the Candian-born designer has won several awards including a 200 thousand pound grant to develop his business into a global fashion brand. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
