- Story Text: Designer Rocco Barocco uses black and white checks dabbed with scarlet and violet for his winter 2008 womenswear collection, meanwhile the Italian actress Sophia Loren inspires bedroom to ballroom looks at Valeria Marini fashion show.
Rocco Barocco was among the designers kicking off Milan Fashion Week on Saturday (February 16).
In his winter 2008-09 womenswear collection he focused on big black-and-white houndstooth checks for wool dresses, skirts and wide-leg, high-waisted trousers.
Barocco used the same design on silk for evening dresses with undulating hems, worn with spikey high heels which came in red, black -- or check.
Black held sway in a stunning Venetian-inspired evening coat with black glittering embroidery and quilted inside, but splashes of scarlet, violet and yellow throughout the collection. lifted the monochrome mood.
Valeria Marini's "Diamond Seduction" womenswear show for winter 2008-2009 was full of femininity, inspired by the classic Italian looks of actress Sophia Loren.
A vermillion short, slinky negligee with black lace panels was rendered slightly more demure by a black lace shawl thrown over the bare shoulders.
A black full-skirted short dress was splattered with crystal raindrops, and topped with a big floppy hat in the same design.
Shoes were silver and sky-high or black and shiny.
An American beauty dress in raspberry ruffles sweeping to the floor was worn in a cascade of poppy petals, echoing the film.
And a finale brought two silver two-wheeler scooters out on the catwalk, with four models wearing diamante-spangled jeans and feminine-touched biker jackets.
