- Story Text: The finishing touches were being put on London Fashion Week on Friday (September 14) as a record 37 shows are expected to grace the catwalks.
This season sees the return of coveted British fashion designers Matthew Williamson, Luella Bartley, Stella McCartney who have showed in New York and Paris over the past few years. Their presence at the 2008 Spring/Summer shows was generating quite a buzz amongst the fashion industry.
Louise Roe, the Daily News Editor from Vogue.com said this season will see an especially glamourous host of catwalk shows, parties and very important guests.
"Apart from the bag loads of Hollywood stars coming, Anna Wintour, the editor of American Vogue is also coming and she doesn't come every season.
So there's a sign there (that this fashion week will be big). We've got Matthew Williamson and Luella Bartley, who are major flagship designers and both of them have been showing in New York for the past few years and they're both coming back this season. And they're both throwing big parties and we can't wait to see what they have in store," she said.
As New York finished their catwalk shows and revealed signs of early trends like a return to the 1970s, as seen at Donna Karan and the cocktail dress, according to Roe. She pointed out that London was an experimental breeding ground for up-and-coming designers and said the House of Holland, by designer Henry Holland were amongst the new designers to watch. He created oversized, neon, 1980s t-shirts with catchy references to celebrities and fashionistas like "Love Me Some Lohan" and "Cause Me Pain Hedi Slimane", referring to the Christian Dior menswear designer. It was a hit amongst the very people it was making fun of and unsurprisingly for their fans. Roe also said the young Scottish designer Christopher Kane with his signature rubber dresses were a hot ticket at fashion week, a show which Wintour is said to be attending.
In addition to the catwalk shows, a host of parties and events will make it a busy week including an opening party by Moet and Chandon, a memorial service for Tatler editor and society maven Isabella Blow, and what is shaping up to be the biggest event of them all, the Couture Gala at the Victoria and Albert museum on Tuesday (September 18). Kylie Minogue, Sting, Kevin Spacey, Claudia Schiffer, Anna Wintour, and Liz Hurley will join the who's who of the British fashion industry, from designers to fashion editors like John Galliano and Alexandra Shulman, editor of British Vogue.
London Fashion Week kicks off Saturday (September 15) and will last until Thursday (September 20) where Stella McCartney will be the last show on the calendar with her sportswear collection for Adidas. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
