When you look costumes from the Ballets Russes, you have kind of a lot of influences coming from all over the world, which is also typical for my work. You have a lot of fabrics, you have a lot of prints, but they are put in a very free way together. On first look, it looks like whatever you want, but at the end you see there's a real system behind it. And then when you start to study the elegance and iconic style of David Bowie, you see quite a lot of similar things, especially when you look at the Ziggy Stardust period, to the Berlin period, all of these things. So there are real similarities. That was the starting point of this collection." It's to get really optical effects that I combine them in a very strange way sometimes. So two or three prints and embroideries in one dress. It's really to create complete compositions in fact, instead of like putting different garments together."

- Story Text: A mishmash of contrasting textures and prints reigned at Dries Van Noten's catwalk show in Paris held inside the French capital's city hall (Hotel de Ville) on Wednesday (March 2).
The Belgian designer told Reuters backstage prior to his show that his women's ready-to-wear fall/winter 2011/12 collection was inspired by the elaborate, theatrical costumes of the Ballets Russes and the iconic style of English rockstar David Bowie. Bowie's hit single "Heroes" was the accompanying soundtrack for the designer's show.
Models strutted down the runway sporting clothes that married unexpected fabrics and patterns. For instance, a green print shirt with a luxurious fur collar and a sole shiny sequinned sleeve. Or a black and white patterned wool coat adorned with fur on one lapel.
"Embroidery, prints, all these things are very important. It's to get really optical effects that I combine them in a very strange way sometimes," said Van Noten.
"So two or three prints and embroideries in one dress," he said.
Bright prints, bold colours, gold brocade and jacquard, exploded on the runway.
"You have a lot of fabrics, you have a lot of prints, but they are put in a very free way together. On first look, it looks like whatever you want, but at the end you see there's a real system," he added.
Accessories made up black and snakeskin leather ankle booties with chunky Plexiglass platform heels and handbags featuring both leather and fur.
Van Noten is one of the original Antwerp Six, the group of emerging Belgian fashion designers who gained international fame for their avant-garde creations in the Eighties. His look has been described as poetic and cerebral and almost always incorporates art-inspired prints and intricate embroidery. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
