- Story Text: Five Argentine designers got the chance to show their talents to the global fashion community at New York City's fashion week Thursday (September 17), in the famed Bryant Park tents.
The show was arranged by the Consulate of Argentina in New York City, with the mission to promote Argentine fashion design and to bring increased interest in garment industry exports from the South American nation.
The five privileged designers were Benito Fernandez, Min Agostini and Fabian Zitta, and fashion houses Cardon and Eufemia.
In choosing the looks to show on the runway, some designers were aware that they had a rare chance to show the best of Latin American fashion and culture to the world. Benito Fernandez, in particular, wanted to highlight the use of color in his designs.
"We are coming to New York for the first time and we have to show something Latin, which is what we are, also something of color and something related to our essence, which for Latin America, is color," says Designer Benito Fernandez. "So I tried to combine all the ethnicities, fabrics and all that is organic, and make it more sophisticated."
Jose Muti, the designer for the line Cardon, displayed looks influenced by traditional Argentine gaucho styles with a modern flair, but believes his clothes to be multi-national.
"It's gaucho but at the same time not gaucho. The collection is inspired by, well if you look at what I am wearing, by garments worn by our ancestors but worn with new textiles and fabrics," says Jose Muti, designer for Cardon. "It's a collection that could be from any part of the world."
A runway show at fall fashion week can turn lucrative for designers that show there -- it is attended by thousands of industry insiders. Debora Bandura, who helped to organize the Argentine show, hoped that the event would raise interest and business opportunities for the designers.
"Yes we hope that the designers will sell their collections in the U.S. market. They are very talented and come with very good prices," says Bandura. "We really hope that there will be more Argentine fashion in the shops of New York."
