- Story Text: A Bolivia designer known for her paper creations finds inspiration for this year's show in Coca-Cola cups, egg cartons and cellophane as she hones in on the issue of recycling.
Bolivian designer Marion Macedo has spent the past several years snipping and sewing her way into the fashion world with her extravagant paper creations. But this year, she took her annual fashion show to a new level, working Coca-Cola cups, used egg cartons and old cellophane into her program.
On Friday (July 23) ten models took to the runway, donning 20 dresses made of materials which otherwise could have wound up in the trash.
The show led off with the pride of Macedo's collection, a creation topped off with hundreds of cardboard Coca-Cola cups.
Macedo said recycling was an important theme for her this year, and the audience had no trouble comprehending her message.
"This got our attention because o Coca-Cola. It makes us think of everything this type of industry spends on paper. It is very representative to begin the show with this, in the sense of recycling," said spectator Leslie Ramos.
Macedo came up with the designs in her La Paz studio, where she found inspiration in egg cartons, cardboard toilet paper holders and old pieces of cellophane.
"This year, everything will be extravagant - the mix of colours and above all, the designs," she told Reuters.
Her shows traditionally features paper designs focusing on a specific theme. Last year, her collection was dedicated to Bolivia's bicentenary celebrations. This year, environmentalism was her main issue.
"I would say this year we have done more with recycling because we want to show that this is the main objective of our project," she said.
This is Macedo's fifth show. She began her annual exhibition of her paper designs in 2006. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
