- Story Text: Franck Sorbier's "Nothing but happiness" haute couture show evokes memories of long forgotten summers and exotic celebrations.
Franck Sorbier's Summer/Spring haute couture collection evoked everything from holidays by the sea to Tahitian celebrations, in an entertaining spectacle of the show.
Sorbier's eclectic collection was inspired by four dominant themes.
"This fashion show is like a photo album of happy memories from holidays for example," explained Sorbier.
"In fact it tells 4 different stories, because I think it's important to be open and eclectic in a collection," he said.
Models wearing white, organza and lace recreated the light atmosphere of friends picnicking, the scene was reminiscent of those recorded in pre-impressionist paintings. In contrast, models in the second morsel paraded bold prints that evoked haute couture's heyday in the 1930s.
"So we submerge ourselves in the atmosphere of the late 1930s, where people discover the sea, people who have never seen the sea and who have never taken a holiday. (Although) You'll see that for this fashion show, we are not catering to people who work in factories but to privileged people," Sorbier joked.
The next instalment of Sorbier's show completely reversed the tempo.
The collection took on a new energy when amazonian models took to the catwalk accompanied by the banging drums of a Polynesian tribe. The couturier extended the highly energetic mood to the fourth segment, dominated by multi coloured, disco-inspired, party outfits.
Haute couture clients can pay in excess of 100,000 euros for the high-end luxury clothes. For couturier Franck Sorbier the extravagance of haute couture is justified. Commenting on the difference between haute couture and pret-a-porter, Sorbier explained: "There isn't this human link with the client that there is with Haute Couture. Women who buy Haute Couture do see because they have needs, they might need a dress, a particular dress for a particular event. It's not the same when you go into a store, take an outfit off a hanger and try it on. This notion does not exist in Haute Couture.
Couture is also a culture."
The relationship between couturier and client is traditionally a strong one. Before ready-to- wear collections became the norm, haute couture clients would stick loyally by one couturier, who would cater for their every clothing need. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
