- Story Text: On day seven of New York Fashion Week, two designers showed their latest collections on Wednesday (September 16) that they say have been influenced by the arts. Philip Lim took his cues from a painter whereas Georgina Chapman, the woman behind Marchesa, look to the opera for inspiration.
Fashion is art is fashion, according to the man behind 3.1 Phillip Lim. The designer unveiled his collection for Spring 2010, loosely titled 'Collage'.
Describing his use of colours as 'classic with a sense of madness', Phillip Lim's designs featured a palette ranging from lipstick red to lilac to amethyst to chartreuse, subdued with navy, ecru and black.
The designer says he was inspired after a visit to a Pablo Picasso art exhibition.
"We think of Picasso and he's an old master. When I saw the show it moved me, it was so modern and striking, his primitive use of lines and colours, the muted colors. Just that link between exoticism, primitivism, and modernism, you know. So we start the show as we are voyeurs of this woman, this mystery woman, we are curious, she is curious in the way she dresses," Lim told Reuters, backstage.
Fabrics ranged from organza to techno polyester, to simple old-fashioned silk, combined with organic jerseys.
The culmination of months of hard work, Lim admits he has butterflies before each show, but was looking forward to having a well-deserved break, at the end of it all.
"I get into a car or taxi, go home, and watch the video, by myself. And have a beer" Lim laughs.
Marchesa, who is known for her jaw-dropping gowns favored by celebrities and socialites, was also inspired by the arts but of a more theatrical nature.
"Madame Butterfly - is the theme so it's romantic. It's about the layers of love and it's got Asian overtones," she told Reuters.
Many of the models were Asian and the gowns had distinct Eastern influences. One black and white strapless satin dress looked like it was made of stenciled paper.
"I've always found Asia an inspiration," she said. "I went traveling for a year in Asia before I started college so it's something in my blood. I don't know, I think it's beautiful, the culture is so rich and the history is so rich."
It cannot be easy being a designer known for expensive gowns during a recession. Chapman said her wedding gowns provided her with steady business because despite downturns people still get married and need elaborate dresses.
