- Story Text: A weary fashion pack descends on Paris for the last shows of the season, starting with a moody black collection from Turkish-French label Dice Kayek and an young, upbeat show from Isabel Marant. After the hip New York shows, the cutting-edge creativity of London and the sleek sophistication of Milan, fashionistas were looking forward to classic Parisian chic on Monday (February 26), and the Dice Kayek show didn't disappoint them.
The predominantly black collection drew on ideas of protection and body armour for inspiration and was full of sleek, skinny trousers, moulded leather tunics and tiny mini-skirts. Volume was key, with sculpted sleeves and structured tailoring.
The highlight of the show was a silver chain-mail dress inspired by the Ottoman empire and the Japanese kimono.
Turkish-born designer Ece Ege, who runs the Dice Kayek label with her sister Ayse, said the chain-mail dress was her favourite piece in the collection.
"I'm always so much influenced from my culture, all the Ottoman clothing. I like Japan so the kimono styles; I mix them all up and then this is the result. This is actually a jalabah, a kaftan jalabah. It's always very large and long and then it's a cape and the same time and it's a cocktail dress," she said.
Dice Kayek has presented collections for more than a decade but only opened their first shop in Paris a year ago. The sisters now divide their time between Paris and Istanbul and manufacture almost all their garments in Turkey.
The tone was lighter at French designer Isabel Marant. It was a collection more influenced by spring than winter, with shorts, linen skirts and cotton tunics layered over skinny trousers or mini-skirts. The colour palate was light and breezy, dominated by creams, pinks and pale blues. One of the few concessions to winter was huge fur hats.
Marant has become popular with Hollywood stars such as actress Kirsten Dunst or director Sofia Coppola.
"What makes me happiest is when actresses come by themselves to get dressed with my clothes. I've had so much pleasure to meet Sofia Coppola in one of my shops and and Kirsten Dunst. I'm especially happy because I admire these people and it is great that it's reciprocated," she said.
Paris Fashion Week continues until Sunday (March 4), with shows by Chanel, Dior and Alexander McQueen among the most hotly anticipated. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
