- Story Text: Italian designer Vittorio Missoni organizes his first ever show in Latin America.
Italian fashion house Missoni recently presented a retrospective catwalk show in Peru to mark the knitwear firm's 50th anniversary.
Missoni, famous for its exuberantly colored couture knits in bold stripes and zig zags, is a private, family company, and was founded in 1953 by husband and wife duo Tai and Rosita "My parents have always been working with colours, and yarns and knits," said designer Vittorio Missoni. "This is the base of our business and matching colours and yarns and knits, it's what we know to make and what Missoni is known for."
The company started off making knitted jogging suits -- Tai was a 400 meters hurdles finalist in the 1948 Olympic Games, where he met his then-student wife.
It shot to fame in the late 1960s after a fashion show in Florence where the clothes turned out to be "a little transparent" under the lights.
The clothes in the retrospective -- many picked up at flea markets -- were "living memories" of growing up in the family firm, Missoni said as he flipped fondly through the rails.
They included including a lurex dress in metallic green, pink and blue and patchwork coats and bold 1960s geometric designs, plus a few pieces from Missoni's floaty, summer collection as it seeks a more contemporary edge.
Missoni said the he wants to expand in the United States, Japan and China. He expects profits in 2004 to grow 10 to 15 percent with sales 15 to 20 percent higher and Russia, Brazil and Middle Eastern countries like Kuwait, Dubai and Beirut up-and-coming markets. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
