- Story Text: A celebration of national aesthetics and Peruvian women dominated the third day of Lima Fashion Week in the capital on Wednesday (March 25), displaying the country's top designers' Fall Winter Collections in the event's eight edition.
Peruvian designer, Ana Maria Guiulfo, whose work has been displayed at Paris and Miami Fashion Weeks, found inspiration in the progressive female comic book character, Erminia, created by artist Valerie Velasco with the support of the Spanish Agency for international Development Cooperation.
Erminia is depicted in dynamic video animations set in Cuzco, confronting local issues such as domestic violence and gender inequality in political representation.
In her pleated and voluminous skirt, her wide, white "sombrero," plaits and embroidered bags, she represents a traditional Andean woman, boldly taking on modern times.
Guiulfo brought this bold attitude to the catwalk with pleated skirts, bright coloured waist-bands and vibrant comic-book prints, innovating traditional styles.
"This collection is dedicated to the women of the Andes, but it is a collection which can be worn by women in the United States, Europe, all over. So it is a design for everyone but with a little something extra," Guiulfo told Reuters at the event on Wednesday.
Kuna also presented a proud Peruvian display, with its latest collection of alpaca fibres, gaining international momentum with outlets in Chile, Australia, the United States and Europe.
"Everything has been made with baby alpaca, or baby alpaca mixed with wool. The accessories are made of baby alpaca mixed with silk or with wool which also comes from the Suri alpaca," said Kuna designer, Sylvie Patthey, who presents the fibre as a national fabric, given that 90 percent of the world's alpaca population is in Peru.
Gerardo Privat, who has established five successful lines under his name - Privat Couture, Pret-a-porter, Footwear, Home and PRIVATE by Gerardo Privat - with growing international success, also turned back to his roots with a show of Amazonian opulence.
He delighted audiences with silks stamped in animal prints, foliage and tropical flowers, recognising the growing popularity of the proposed national fabric and working with alpaca fibre for the first time in his career.
According to Lima Fashion Week director, Efrain Salas, these collections represent the developing potential and creativity of the national market.
"The fashion market in Peru is very young, it is a market which is just beginning to evolve. Our Fashion Week has been running for five years, and this is the eighth edition, and the designers have begun to mature and present more interesting collections every time," said Salas.
