- Story Text:Israeli human rights groups B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel accused the state of Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza war in a report published on Monday (July 28).
At a news conference held in Jerusalem, activists from both groups discussed their allegations against the state of Israel and said there was no room for denying the deliberate actions of the Israeli government to damage and destroy Palestinian society in Gaza.
The spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, David Mencer, called the genocide allegation "baseless."
"There is no intent, key for the charge of genocide," Mencer said, adding that Israel had provided aid to Palestinians which was "incongruous" with the accusation.
In recent weeks, humanitarian agencies have warned of an escalating crisis in Gaza.
On Monday, the Gaza health ministry said at least 14 people had died in the past 24 hours of starvation and malnutrition, bringing the war's death toll from hunger to 147, including 89 children, most in just the last few weeks.
Israel announced on Sunday it was implementing daily humanitarian pauses in some areas to facilitate movement of aid after mounting international pressure.
The WFP said that almost 470,000 people in Gaza are enduring famine-like conditions, with 90,000 women and children in need of specialist nutrition treatments.
