- Story Text: The 75-year-old Scottish actor best known for his role as James Bond has received one of the highest honours in European cinema today. He was one of the guests of honour at the European Film Awards in Berlin on saturday (December 03), where he received the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.
"It's the first time I've received it here, in Germany and I am absolutely thrilled", Connery said ahead of the ceremony for the 18th European Film Awards. "I was here a few years ago and it was all too brief. And the situation is the same now because I have to go back to London and we are a little jet lagged. But it's a great honour."
Connery also gave an endorsement of Daniel Craig as the new James bond.
"Very good choice. Very good. Craig's a very good actor," he replied when asked of what he though of Craig as the next 007.
In a career spanning over 50 years, Connery has appeared in more than 70 feature films since the 1950's, including classics such as 'A Bridge Too Far', 'Marnie', 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade', 'The Name of the Rose' and 'The Untouchables', for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1988. He has worked with directors including Alfred Hitchcock, Sir Richard Attenborough, Sidney Lumet and Steven Spielberg.
Connery was knighted by the Queen in 2002 for his services to film.
Also at the ceremony, two French films and British movie 'My Summer of Love' will be competing for multiple awards. 'Cache' (Hidden) has been nominated in seven categories, including best actress for Juliette Binoche.
British indie film 'My Summer of Love' is in the running for four awards, including best film and best director for Polish-born film-maker Pawel Pawlikoswki.
Other nominees included German Actress Julia Jentsch (nominated Best European Actress 2005) in 'Sophie Scholl- The Final Days', where she plays a young girl fighting against the Nazi regime who is being sentenced to death for her activities. 'Sophie Scholl' was also nominated as best European Film.
German director Wim Wenders who is also president of the European Film Academy was also nominated, as well as German actor Henry Huebchen for the lead role in the German-Jewish comedy 'Go For Zucker'. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
