- Story Text:Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India in late August, Interfax news agency quoted India's national security adviser Ajit Doval as saying in Moscow on Thursday (August 7).
This will be Putin’s first visit since Russia’s war with Ukraine that started in 2022, with his last visit to the world’s most populous country in 2021 where both countries struck trade and arms deals.
The last meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin took place on October 22, 2024, in Kazan, Russia, on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit.
This was Modi's second visit to Russia in three months, following an earlier informal meeting in July 2024 during the 22nd Russia-India Annual Summit in Moscow, where Modi was presented with Russia’s highest award. Putin signed the decree honouring Modi with Order of St. Andrew in 2019.
News of Putin's latest visit comes as U.S. President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods on Wednesday (August 6), raising the total duty to 50% — among the highest imposed on any U.S. trading partner. The new tariff, effective August 28, is meant to penalise India for continuing to buy Russian oil, Trump has said.
