- Story Text:The United States has principally agreed to exempt Indonesian palm oil, cocoa and rubber exports from President Donald Trump's 19% tariff imposed since August 7, Indonesia's chief tariff negotiator and chief economic minister Airlangga Hartarto said on Tuesday (August 26).
The exemption will take effect once both sides reach a final agreement, but no timeline was available because the U.S. was busy with tariff negotiations with other countries, Airlangga said in an interview.
During the tariff talks, a potential U.S. investment in fuel storage in the Southeast Asian country, together with Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara and state energy firm Pertamina, was discussed, Airlangga said.
"We are waiting for their response, but during the meeting, basically, the principle (exemption) has been agreed for products that are not produced in the U.S., such as palm oil and cocoa and rubber...it will be zero or close to zero," Airlangga said.
Southeast Asia's largest economy was among the first nations to strike a tariff deal with Trump in July, but Jakarta ended up receiving the same rate as some other countries in the region such as Thailand and Malaysia. Its U.S. tariff is also only slightly below Vietnam's 20%.
Indonesia has offered billions worth of investment in the U.S. and purchases of American crude, LPG, planes and farm products during the negotiations. It also promised to give near zero tariff for American goods entering its market.
