Stars from the worlds of sports and entertainment mixed easily on the red carpet at the The 2010 ESPY Awards. ESPN's athletic version of the Oscars took place Wednesday night (July 14) at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
The event, which draws athletes from all over the world, honors the year's top sports performances with fans voting to determine the winners.
The eclectic mix of talent gracing the red carpet for the event included NFL quarterback Brett Farve, gold medalist skater Evan Lysacek, NBA star Amare Stoudemire, soccer standout Landon Donovan and actor Mark Wahlberg Many talked about the connection between sports and Hollywood.
"They are both entertainers, whether on the basketball court or in front of the camera, you are entertaining," explained Amare Stoudemire, who recently signed to play with the New York Knicks of the NBA.
"You have fans who come to see you perform and it is a great opportunity and that is why we have such a common denominator between both."
Veteran actor Jeff Daniels agreed that there is a real connection between the two professions.
"I think there is a lot of drama in sports that has a lot in common with the drama that entertainment does," added Daniels.
On the evening, Super Bowl star Drew Brees was the big winner taking home four trophies, including best male athlete of the year.
"I would like to say congratulations to the other nominees. It is an honor just to be here," said Brees in accepting the award in which he beat out the likes of basketball greats Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.
Gold medal downhill skier Lindsey Vonn won the honor for best female athlete. While U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan earned three awards on the night, including best performance under pressure for his heroics in the recently completed World Cup.
The ESPY Awards also offers the athlets's a chance to be fans.
"I just try to catch up with guys who we haven't seen in a while, catch up with some old friends and see some icons that you look up too," explained San Diego Chargers star player Shaun Phillips.
The ESPYs, which stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, celebrate the sports network ESPN's commitment to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a partnership launched with the late Jim Valvano at the inaugural ESPYs in 1993.
During the ceremony, the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance was presented to Denver Nuggets coach George Karl, a prostate cancer survivor who was diagnosed with neck and throat cancer this year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
