- Story Text: The film awards season has officially begun, with the Gotham Independent Film Awards taking place in New York City on Monday (November 29).
Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway was among the stars to turn out for the awards ceremony, which recognises the year's top independent films, and those who made them.
As Hathaway worked her way along the red carpet, it was clear the actress had a different film awards ceremony on her mind - the 2011 Academy Awards. Only hours earlier, the 'Love and Other Drugs' star had been named as co-host for next year's Oscars, alongside actor James Franco.
"I can probably let it slip that I'm terrified. And exhilarated and excited," Hathaway gushed.
Hathaway said she was still coming to terms with the news, and hadn't even thought about how she was going to prepare for one of the entertainment industry's toughest gigs.
"I mean, I'm going to do, I'm three hours into the announcement so I don't have a set plan yet," Hathaway said.
Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank said the Hathaway-Franco duo was a unique choice.
"I think that's great. I think that's great. It's an interesting choice. It's a different choice and I think it's always fun to mix it up," Swank said.
Swank was one of four individuals to be recognised as Tribute honorees during Monday's Gotham Independent Film Awards ceremony.
"It is such an incredible honor. I was here 11 years ago with 'Boys Don't Cry'. It's crazy to think it's been 11 years. You know it's these small independent films that I love because I think they mirror life and more often than not give a newcomer an opportunity, which is the case with me and I, I'm just honored," Swank said.
Other film veterans to be recognised included actor Robert Duvall, Focus Features CEO James Schamus and director Darren Aronofsky.
"Darren's really incredible because he's so prepared and so focused and so intuitive. I mean he always has good ideas. He's never, he never says something that you're like, I don't know what that means. It's always very logical. He knows how to work with everyone differently. I watched him work with every actor, very much tailored to what they needed. And with me, he did something really beautiful which was the last take he would always say, 'do this one for yourself'. And just putting it that way was just so magical because everyone else had said, in the past directors had said, 'ok this one's a freebie', but saying 'do it for yourself' gave such a different inspiration," said actress Natalie Portman who stars in Aronofsky's latest film 'Black Swan'.
Aronofsky said he felt honored to be recognised by his peers.
"It's a huge thrill that, you know, to get recognised by them. I was really a struggling filmmaker with them so it's been a long road and it's kind of, it's moving and touching and to share a stage with these other filmmakers that are getting honored is big for me too," Aronofsky said.
The Gotham Film Awards could have been easily mistaken for the premiere of 'Black Swan', with all the key cast members in attendance to support the film and its director.
Actress Winona Ryder said she felt proud to be part of the 'Black Swan' cast amid all the awards buzz for the pyschological thriller about ballet dancers.
"Fantastic. I'm really proud, really honored to be part of it. It's a great film, it's really, really exciting," Ryder said.
The actress joked at suggestions the film - and director - were dark and twisted.
"Hmm.. Darren Aronofsky.. dark and twisted. I think they go together well," Ryder laughed.
Other films to be nominated included 'The Kids Are All Right' starring Annette Benning. The actress said although she loved the film, she was unsure how it would fare during the coming film awards season.
"That I don't know," Benning said.
"I just know I loved it. When I first read it, I'm lucky that they asked me to do it. I think it's a very special movie. Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg wrote it and they created this incredible family, so I just, I'm just so lucky that it's having a life and it's very exciting," Benning said.
