Summary:During his visit to the African state of Chad, French President Georges Pompidou announced that the last French troops would be withdrawn from the territory and that meant the end of permanent service in Africa for some of the world's toughest troops - the French Foreign Legion. There had been some 900 Legion paratroopers in Chad called in to help the government there contain a rebellion.
