- Story Text: Russia's "Leviathan" won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film on Sunday (January 11). The film, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, tells the story of a man forced to fight a corrupt mayor when he is told that his house will be demolished.
"While indeed this is an incredibly happy moment for all of us, for our beloved families, our gifted cast and crew," Zvyagintsev said as he accepted the award. "The more we think about the fortunate fate of our movie, the more we believe that it doesn't matter whether you are Korean, American, Russian, or French. A tragic story of an ordinary man who comes face to face with an indifferent system is absolutely universal."
The win gives a strong push for the film to take the best foreign language Oscar, when those honors are handed out on February 22.
"The major task when we do the movies is our idea to come up with a real movie which can make the people think, laugh and cry. It always requires passion and patience...This is risky business," Zvyagintsev said backstage after his win.
The other Golden Globe nominated foreign films were: "Force Majeure," ''Gett: The Trial Of Viviane Amsalem," ''Ida," and "Tangerines." - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
