- Story Text: THE WIDOW OF 65 YEAR-OLD HERBERT CUKURS -- ALLEGED LATVIAN WAR CRIMINAL MURDERED IN MONTEVIDEO -- WAS REPORTED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO HAVE SAID HER HUSBAND PHOTOGRAPHED ONE OF THE MEN BELIEVED CONNECTED WITH THE KILLING. ON TUESDAY, A PATHOLOGIST SAID CUKURS WAS KILLED BY SEVERAL BLOWS ON THE HEAD.
THE BODY WAS FOUND BY POLICE LAST SATURDAY IN A LOCKED SUBURBAN CHALET NEAR MONTEVIDEO, FOLLOWING A NEWS AGENCY DESPATCH FROM BONN. THE MESSAGE SAID A GROUP CALLING THEMSELVES "THOSE WHO CAN NEVER FORGET" HAD EXECUTED CUKURS FOR HIS PART IN THE MASS SLAYINGS IN NAZI-OCCUPIED LATVIA. POLICE SAID THEY BELIEVED THE MURDER WAS THE WORK OF A SECRET SOCIETY AVENGING WAR VICTIMS.
POLICE FOUND LARGE BLOODSTAINS ACROSS THE FLOOR AND WALLS OF THE CHALET. INSIDE THE TRUNK WERE PAPERS IN CUKURS' NAME AND A TYPEWRITTEN EXTRACT FROM THE BOOK "NUREMBURG DIARY", REFERRING TO MASS KILLINGS BY S.S. MEN. THE AGENCY DESPATCH SAID CUKURS PERSONALLY SUPERVISED THE KILLING OF MORE THAN 80,000 MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
POLICE SAID ON TUESDAY THAT TWO FRENCHMEN, TWO AUSTRIANS AND A MAN WHO DESCRIBED HIMSELF AS AN 'ISRAELI DIPLOMAT' WERE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE MURDER. MRS. CUKURS TOLD A SAO PAULO (BRAZIL) NEWSPAPER ON THURSDAY THAT HER HUSBAND HAD PHOTOGRAPHED A MAN -- AT HER INSISTENCE -- BECAUSE SHE HAD BECOME SUSPICIOUS OF HIM; HE WAS A RECENT ACQUAINTANCE OF HER HUSBAND.
EARLIER THIS WEEK GUNNAR, CUKURS' SON, SAID HIS FATHER HAD MADE THE TRIP TO MONTEVIDEO AFTER THE MAN HAD SENT A TELEGRAM ASKING HIM TO COME TO DISCUSS A POSSIBLE BUSINESS VENTURE. MRS. CUKURS SAYS THAT THE FILM AND PHOTOGRAPHS ARE NOW IN GUNNAR'S POSSESSION.
