- Story Text: More than 400 Greek and Turkish Cypriot prisoners of war were exchanged in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, on Monday (21 October)- ending a three-day exchange operation.
The prisoners had been held for three months after the Turkish invasion in July. In the exchanges with started on Saturday (19 October) more than 1,000 prisoners were freed.
The exchanges took place outside the Ledra Palace Hotel where a United Nations Command Post has been set up.
Thousands of people looking for relatives crowded the streets on both sides of the "Green Line" which divides Greeks and Turks in Nicosia.
The exchanges came three weeks after the first batch of able-bodied prisoners were released in Nicosia.
The Greek Cypriot prisoners were brought from detention centres in Southern turkey, while the Turkish Cypriots came from Limassol in south-western Cyprus.
