- Story Text: A new warship for the Nigerian Navy was commissioned at Britain's Royal Navy dockyard at Portsmouth on Thursday (7 December).
The ceremony was performed by the First Lord of the Nigerian Navy, Vice-Admiral J.E.A. Wey.
The vessel is the 600-ton British built corvette NNS Dorina, the first of two designed and built by Vosper Thornycroft Limited for the Nigerian Navy.
The Dorina was handed over to its 34-year-old captain, commandeer Akin Aduwo, who has served in the Nigerian Navy for 14 years.
The new corvette cost GBP2 million sterling (5 million dollars) and was launched at Portsmouth shipyard in September, 1970. It is armed with modern fire control, a twin four-inch gun and smaller weapons.
Its crew comprises seven officers, thirteen senior ratings and 40 junior ratings.
The Dorina and its sister ship, N.N.S. Otobo, are known as Hippopotamus Class ships. Each has a name that means "hippopotamus" in one of the main languages of Nigeria.
