- Story Text: INTRO: A fashion show with a difference has kicked off the 10th annual High Times magazine Cannabis Cup awards ceremony in Amsterdam - the difference being that all the clothes were made of hemp.
Hemp-cloth is made from the versatile stalks and branches of the cannabis plant, whose leaves and buds yield the drug marijuana.
The fashion show was one of a series of events and exhibitions at the 1997 Cannabis Cup awards held in Amsterdam on Thursday (November 27). The awards are designed to highlight the multitude of uses for the cannabis plant.
Exhibitors displayed hemp clothes, bags and accessories, hemp bath soap and body lotion, hemp wine and cooking oil, hemp building bricks and paper and of course marijuana ready to smoke.
Cannabis campaigners point to these varied uses for the plant, as well as numerous medical benefits that have been the subject of an increasing body of research, to call for its reintroduction on a large scale to modern agriculture.
Hemp was a valuable crop grown on farms in Europe and America until the middle of this century when social concerns about the recreational use of marijuana drove it off the farm.
Now hemp campaigners say there is a booming renaissance in the cultivation and use of hemp, facilitated by more official tolerance of medical marijuana use.
Nowhere is more tolerant of hemp in all its guises than the Netherlands, and in particular the capital Amsterdam, which makes it an ideal location for the annual Cannabis Cup.
Notwithstanding the focus on alternative uses for marijuana, the Cannabis Cup is above all about smoking, debating and judging a bewildering array of marijuana and hashish.
"The judges are looking for the taste, the smell, the feel and the look of marijuana. Its a complex process but its easy to know which ones are good," says High Times' Steve Hager, who founded the awards ten years ago and disagrees that judges are too 'stoned' to make an impartial, let alone coherent, decision.
"The judges take their jobs very seriously," he said.
The week of events and parties surrounding the cup attract smokers from all over the world, with a majority from the United States where authorities are significantly less tolerant of marijuana than in the Netherlands.
The awards themselves featured a performance from Rita Marley, widow of legendary reggae singer and marijuana advocate Bob Marley, and the handing out of 10 prizes including best hemp product, best 'imported' hashish, best coffeeshop, best hydroponically cultivated marijuana and the overall Cannabis Cup - won this year by the Dampkring coffeeshop from Amsterdam.
