- Story Text: Newsmen are maintaining a round-the-clock vigil on a London luxury hotel in hopes that the United States multi-millionaire, Howard Hughes, will show himself publicly for the first time in many years. The millionaire flew to London by private plane on Wednesday and immediately moved into the ninth floor of the Inn-on-the-Park Hotel overlooking London's Hyde Park.
Previously, the millionaire recluse had been living in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua until Saturday's (23 December) earthquake ripped through the city, badly damaging Mr. Hughes' hotel.
Mr. Hughes and his staff on the ninth floor of the London hotel, occupy several rooms, understood to have been hired by the Rothschild banking house. There is no indication when Mr. Hughes may decide to come out into the open after years of seclusion. But an side hinted that it could be soon. The side, Mr. John Eckersley, said that Mr. Hughes hoped to live "morse of a life", if people would let him. There is also speculation that he may attempt to renew his American passport while in London, and to do this, he would have to call personally at the United states Embassy.
His entry to Britain without a valid passport raised the possibility of a row in the British Parliament. The British Home Secretary, Mr. Carr, is to be questioned in Parliament about the way immigration officials arranged for Mr. Hughes to be admitted.
Howard Hughes, aged sixty-seven, is one of the world's richest men. It is difficult to assess the full extent of his wealth, but estimates place him among the world's five wealthiest people, with assets around GBP1,000 million (US $2,400 million). In commercial circles, the rumour is that he intended to stay in London for about six months to assess investment prospects in Britain and the European Common Market.
SYNOPSIS: A luxury hotel in London, .... the latest hideaway of the millionaire recluse, Howard Hughes. Mr. Hughes, reputed to be one of the world's five richest men, installed himself in the hotel on Wednesday after fleeing the earthquake in the Nicaraguan capital, Managua. Mr. Hughes and several aides occupy several rooms on the hotel's ninth floor.
This photograph shows one of the rooms which will be the multi-millionaire's home for an unknown time. There are rumours he will remain in London for several months. Mr. Hughes has not been seen in public for many years... and if the tight hotel security remains, these photographs will probably be the closest anyone comes to him without permission.
But newsmen maintain a hopeful vigil in the foyer. There have been hints from aides that he may end his seclusion or he may go to the Untied States Embassy to renew his passport.
