- Story Text: Israeli warplanes have struck targets in the
Palestinian territories after a wave of attacks on Israelis by
Palestinian militants.
The strike by Israeli aircraft early on Tuesday
morning (February 19) came hours after Palestinian militants
killed four Israelis in separate attacks in the West Bank and
Gaza.
In the West Bank city of Ramallah, a missile fired by an
Israeli warplane destroyed the police headquarters in the
Al-Tira neighbourhood of the Palestinian-ruled city. There
were no casualties.
Israeli struck in retaliation for an attack by a
Palestinian militant in the Gaza Strip on Monday night
(February 18) which killed a Jewish settler and two Israeli
soldiers.
Israeli jets on Tuesday also destroyed part of a security
complex in Rafah, a Palestinian refugee camp in the southern
Gaza Strip, witnesses said. There was no immediate word of
casualties. The Israeli army had no immediate comment.
In an earlier attack on Monday, a Palestinian militant
killed himself and an Israeli policeman when he detonated
explosives in his car near a West Bank settlement.
But the head of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's
Fatah faction in the West Bank, Marwan Barghoutti accused
Israel of bombing a residential neighbourhood and said the
only way to bring peace was for Israel to end its occupation
of the Palestinian territories.
