- Story Text: U.S. warplanes pounded targets in the rebel-held
city of Falluja, but no casualties reported.
U.S. warplanes have continued to pound the Iraqi
city of Falluja.
Heavy strikes early on Wednesday (October 20, 2004)
demolished at least one house. So far there are no reports
of casualties.
American forces are targeting the city in a bid to get
rid of insurgents who have made Falluja a hotbed of
resistance against the U.S. occupation. They suspect
Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a declared al Qaeda ally,
and his supporters are holed up in the city. Residents say
civilians are the main casualties.
On Wednesday (October 20) morning, residents said the
only building hit was an empty house. The owners had
already fled the city.
One man was adamant al-Zarqawi was not in Falluja. He
accused U.S. President George W. Bush of being Zarqawi
himself.
"The house was empty. It had no people inside it.
During the bombing, my son was even hit in the head by
flying debris. You know, there is no Musab Al-Zarqawi here.
There is nobody, nothing. Zarqawi, what is Zarqawi? Who
even says that Zarqawi exists. Bush is probably Zarqawi."
The interim Iraqi government has threatened to attack
Falluja unless Zarqawi's men are handed over, as part of
its drive to pacify all of Iraq before parliamentary
elections due in January.
