- Story Text: Soldiers wounded in Portugal's colonial wars were joined by two thousand refugees from the country's former colonies in a demonstration in Lisbon on Saturday (20 September), demanding the right to work.
Some of the men took part in the demonstration in their wheel chairs. They were pushed along by supporters, who included hospital and factory workers.
They came from hospitals thought the Lisbon area where they are being cared for after being wounded in action in Portugal's African colonies of Mozambique and Angola.
They carried banners and chanted slogans, demanding the Government find them employment. This was the latest in a series of demonstrations by refugees demanding the right to work.
The plight of the unemployed refugees is one of the first serious problems for the recently formed government of Prime Minister Admiral Jose Azevedo. His administration -- which reports describe as "left of centre" -- replaced a pro-Communist government headed by General Vasco Goncalves.
With thousands of refugees from Angola arriving in Lisbon almost everyday by ship and plane, observers suggest the situation has reached a critical stage. Reports from Portugal say that the economy is in a mess -- and before jobs can be created in anything like the numbers required - there will have to be firm economic measures.
