A U.S. warplane attacked the rebel-held Iraqi city
of Falluja on Friday night (October 1), killing at least
three people, a Reuters witness and a hospital official
said.
Dr. Mohammad al-Dulaimi said at Falluja's main hospital
that the dead were civilians and seven others were wounded
in the raid that also left a house in flames.
"After midnight tonight, American fighter jets attacked
the city of Falluja. They attacked residential homes of
people who were safe in their homes. The hospital received
4 or 5 dead, including one woman and two children, and the
wounded exceeded 11, mostly women and children," said Dr.
Mushtar Talep.
The Falluja strike came after U.S.-led forces stormed
Samarra on Friday and said more than 100 guerrillas were
killed in air strikes and street-to-street combat during a
major new American offensive to wrest control of the Iraqi
town.
Iraq's defence minister said on Wednesday that U.S. and
Iraqi forces would take control of several rebel-held
cities in October ahead of elections scheduled for January.
U.S. marines launched a major offensive to uproot
insurgents in Falluja in April but withdrew from the
guerrilla and militant hotbed after hundreds of Iraqis were
killed in the fighting.
