- Story Text: As the first group of al Qaeda and Taliban prisoners
arrived at the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo, international
warships continue to patrol the Pakistani coast in search of
members of the al-Qaeda network attempting to flee by sea.
Leading the British taskforce is the aircraft carrier HMS
Illustrious which has been in the Arabian sea since
September 11.
HMS Illustrious is one of the international taskforce
with vessels from the US, France, Japan, Germany, Canada,
Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Australia providing support
for operations in Afghanistan.
The British taskforce is led by the aircraft carrier HMS
Illustrious, which has been converted into a helicopter
carrier from which commandos can be airlifted to southern
Afghanistan.
The British taskforce also includes the assault ship HMS
Fearless, with 200 Royal Marine commandos on board, destroyer
HMS Southampton and the frigate HMS Cornwall as well as a
number of support ships.
The international naval force assembled in the Arabian Sea
force to patrol the Pakistani coast in search of members of
the al-Qaeda network attempting to flee by sea and to provide
support for the military and peacekeeping campaign in
Afghanistan.
"Our mission basically is to be prepared to support any
activity in the war against terrorism out here", commander of
the HMS Illustrious Captain Alan Massey said.
