- Story Text: Thousands of people have gathered in Germany to protest
against a possible war against Iraq and to demand that the
German government does not participate in any way.
According to the police, five thousand anti-war
demonstrators gathered in the northern Germany city of Hamburg
and a couple more thousand protested in front of the U.S. Air
Base in Heidelberg on Saturday (March 1).
In addition to protesting against a possible war in Iraq,
the demonstrators also called for the German government to
remain strong in its stance against a war by not getting
involved even in passive assistance for an attack.
"We clearly have to expand the movement in Germany still
further, and apply pressure on the government to stay by their
position. Also there must not be any indirect assistance in a
war, for example that air space is made available for the war
or that AWACS planes are made available, or the German crews.
That is also support for the war, and so we are also against
that. Unfortunately our government isn't at the moment,"
protester Michael Schade told Reuters at the demonstration on
the Gaensemarkt in the centre of Hamburg.
The demonstration in Hamburg had been organised by the
local branch of the German Trade Unions Congress, the DGB.
In Heidelberg the local peace movement has taken to having
a demonstration in front of the U.S. Air Base every Saturday.
Police in Heidelberg say 1,500 attended the demonstration
this week, organisers say it was up to 2,500 who marched past
the U.S. Campbell Barracks.
U.S soldiers looked on impassively while young and old
demonstrators shouted protests and carried banners saying real
heroes don't go to war.
The demonstrations took place without any incidents.
